Background

With the remarkable growth of VTubers, gaming, and the metaverse, virtual spaces are expanding as a new cross-border arena for creative expression. "Virtual photography," born within these spaces, allows photographers to freely design their subjects, lighting, composition, and timing — giving it strong potential to produce artworks that vividly reflect the artist's themes and intentions.

Virtual Photography Showcase 2026 brings together virtual photography works created around the world, primarily through VRChat, and displays them at the highly public venue of the Kanazawa 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art. The goal is to share the appeal of virtual culture from an international perspective with those who have had little exposure to it, and to promote virtual culture through virtual photography.

About the New Initiative: "Virtual Photography Advance Program (VPAP)"

As VPS2026 marks its third year, we are launching the new initiative "Virtual Photography Advance Program (VPAP)". The name embodies the ambition to challenge the creation of works at a higher level — culturally, technically, and artistically — through virtual photography.

This program aims to go beyond conventional exhibition and present virtual photography that is a step ahead in terms of expression, production process, and thematic depth, further expanding the possibilities of virtual photography as art.
